Shortly after its formation by several leading hammer producers, the Mounted Breaker Manufacturers Bureau (MBMB) of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), formerly Construction Industry Manufacturers Association (CIMA), initiated a program to develop a method for determining the impact force, or tool energy, of hydraulic hammers. Allied is a founding member of the MBMB and has been actively involved in this lengthy project. The resulting approved method and procedure essentially involves measuring the strain wave generated by impacting a specifically defined test tool and converting the measurements into a tool energy value. This then provided a standardized, consistent and repeatable measurement method, which can be used by any manufacturer, and far more useful data for comparing and understanding products.
While impact energy ratings have become a common method for classifying hydraulic hammers, a number of factors should always be considered in connection with the selection of a hammer product. These include overall ownership and operating costs, maintenance design and serviceability, compatibility to the available carrier, weight relative to performance, efficiency features (such as the Allied Hy-Ram® Select Start system), and product and distributor reputation and support.
